Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - Devin Mantha continued his impressive start to the season for Mississippi by scoring the game winner with 12:38 remaining and the RiverKings defeated the Knoxville Ice Bears 4-2 on Friday night.
Mantha scored by the crease when Knoxville goalie Braely Torris was unable to locate a loose puck after Mark Pustin took a backhand from the slot. Knoxville has lost seven straight games, the last five in regulation.
Matt Beer, Charles Mosey also scored for Mississippi. Linden Bahm added an empty-netter in the final minute of play. Peter Di Salvo made 29 saves. Torris stopped 19 shots, but lost his fifth consecutive decision.
Knoxville began the scoring during a 5-on-3 power play at 15:37 of the first when Corey Hale received the puck at the point from Todd Hosmer. Hale and Doug Reid exchanged passes across the blue line before Hale teed it up for Reid, who slapped a one-timer over the glove of Peter Di Salvo.
After allowing two goals in the second period to give Mississippi its first lead of the game, Josh Cousineau worked the back out from behind of the back of the RiverKings' net and found Zack LaRue on the side of the crease. LaRue took a swipe at the puck and put it behind Di Salvo and tied the score again.
The two teams will head to Southaven Saturday night for the third meeting between the two clubs this year. Mississippi has two regulation wins against Knoxville this season. The game is available for viewing at the Casual Pint on Northshore and available for purchase through www.sphllive.com.
