Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (50-85) executed the clean sweep of the Oklahoma City Dodgers (70-64) in a doubleheader, Wednesday at Principal Park. The I-Cubs took Game 1, 1-0, and Game 2, 3-2.
The I-Cubs squeaked out a victory in Game 1, plating a run in the fifth for the game's only scoring. Mark Zagunis drew a walk to open the frame, moved up on a wild pitch before a fly ball pushed him 90 feet from home. A Jacob Hannemann double drove in Zagunis for the winning run.
Iowa was held to a single hit through the first four innings, coming off the bat of rehabbing Kris Bryant. He finished the game 1-3 with one strikeout. Chris Coghlan was the I-Cubs' only other baserunner through the early innings as he reached via a walk in the first.
Trevor Clifton (W, 4-3) pitched a gem, spinning 5.0 scoreless frames. Brian Duensing, making his third rehab appearance, twirled 1.2 perfect innings before Dillon Maples (S, 10) got the final out as Iowa secured its fifth shutout win of the season.
The pitching duel continued into Game 2 as both teams put up zeros through four. Oklahoma City broke the offensive drought with two runs off three hits and an error in the fifth, getting RBI hits from Travis Taijeron and Rocky Gale. The I-Cubs responded immediately to lock the game in the bottom of the inning. A Trey Martin single and a Coghlan double set up runners on second and third. With two down, centerfielder Alex Verdugo dropped a fly ball off the bat of Mike Freeman, resulting in a two-run error.
The game remained locked 2-2 until the seventh. With two down, Freeman singled, Ryan Court walked and Jason Vosler claimed the walk off with an RBI single to second. The I-Cubs have eight walk-off victories this season.
Duncan Robinson spun 5.0 innings in his second start with Iowa, allowing two runs - one earned - on four hits to lower his ERA to 0.82. Allen Webster contributed a scoreless frame, as did Dakota Mekkes (W, 1-0).
The I-Cubs and Dodgers play the series finale tomorrow at 12:08 p.m. for Downtown Des Moines Day and Mug Club. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacub.com.
