I-Cubs Drop First Half Finale to Sounds
July 8, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
NASHVILLE, TN - For the third straight game, the Nashville Sounds (42-45) scored early in the first inning and never relinquished the advantage as a late rally by the Iowa Cubs (31-57) fell short in a 5-3 loss, Sunday at First Tennessee Park.
Nashville got to righty Eddie Butler (0-2) in his third major league rehab appearance in the first inning as infielder Franklin Barreto hit his second homer in as many days with a solo shot to left field to put the Sounds up by a score of 1-0. Barreto helped double the Sounds lead against Butler in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to plate outfielder Ramon Laureano.
In three innings of work, Butler gave up two runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. It was his longest outing since being placed on Chicago's disabled list on April 20.
Following a pair of sacrifice flies from Sounds first basemen Steve Lombardozzi against Cubs reliever Trevor Clifton, the I-Cubs began their attempt of a comeback down 4-0 in the eighth inning.
To leadoff the frame, catcher Ali Solis launched a solo homer well over the wall in the left field to put the I-Cubs on the board. The homer was Solis' first of the season.
After an RBI single from infielder Melvin Mercades put the Sounds back up by four in the bottom of the eighth, Iowa began the ninth inning with four straight singles and a sacrifice fly by Solis to cut the deficit in half.
Nashville secured the victory as RHP Liam Hendriks (S, 1) recorded the final two outs with two runners on base and the potential game-tying run on second.
Righty Ben Bracewell (2-3) earned his second win of the season by shutting out the Cubs offense through the first six innings of the game. Bracewell allowed just two hits.
Jason Vosler went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games - the longest streak for an I-Cub this season. It is the second-longest hit streak among active players in the PCL behind Round Rock outfielder Willie Calhoun (15 games).
Along with Vosler, outfielder Trey Martin paced the Iowa offense with two hits, including a triple in the seventh inning.
Following the 2018 Triple-A All-Star Break, Iowa and Nashville will start the second half of their respective seasons at Principal Park, beginning a stretch of five games in four days on Thursday night at 7:08 p.m. Tune in to AM 940, www.iowacubs.com or MiLB.tv to follow the action.
