Today's Game: The Final game before the All-Star break will be decided on the arm of Alex Young and Sacramento right-hander Jordan Johnson. Young enters today's game having lost three consecutive contests and Johnson is making just his second Triple-A start of the season. Ildemaro Vargas is riding a 13-game hit streak and was selected to the represent the Aces at the Triple-A All-Star game just this morning. Vargas is batting .289 in 2018 with 103 hits, eight triples, 17 doubles and four home runs.
Last Game: The Aces won game four of this five-game series by a score of 8-1. The Aces scored eight runs on 11 hits and were led offensively by Kevin Cron who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Yasmany Tomas also had a three-run home run, bringing his total to six on the season. Starting pitcher Neftali Feliz was lights out. In just his second start of the season, Feliz went 5.0 innings, allowed one run and five hits. The win improves the Aces to a record of 41-48 on the season with one game left before the All-Star break.
Back-to-back: Ildemaro Vargas was selected to his second consecutive Triple-A All-Star game as a member of the Aces. Vargas is the first Aces player in franchise history to represent the team multiple times at the Triple-A Mid-Summer classic. Last year, in Tacoma, Washington, he went 0-for-1 while teammate Christian Walker went 2-for-4 with a run scored. The infielder is batting .323 against right-handed pitching this season and .335 at Greater Nevada Field. He's played 70 games at shortstop in 2018 and 10 on the other side of the bag at second base. In 617.1 innings at short, he's turned 51 double plays and committed just seven errors. Ildemaro Vargas extended his second-longest hit streak of the season to 13 games last with a 3-for-4 performance. During that span, Vargas is batting .387 (24-for-62) with nine runs scored, nine RBI and three stolen bases. His double off Mike Connolly was his eighth of the season. His longest streak of the season was 16 games from May 29 through June 17. He went 29-for-75 with 12 runs scored and nine RBI.
Heating UP: Kevin Cron has been on fire over his last 10 games. The power-hitting slugger is batting .474 (18-for-38) with 13 runs scored, eight home runs, 23 RBI and six walks. He is second in all of Minor League Baseball in home runs since June 27, trailing only Wilson Garcia of Fresno. He leads MiLB in RBI (23) since 6/27 and is second in runs scored behind Kirvin Moesquit in the South Atlantic League.
Know your Foe: Sacramento starter Jordan Johnson is a Northern California native. A 23rd round selection by the Giants in 2014 out of Cal State Northridge, Johnson made his Triple-A debut at Raley Field on July 3rd just 18 miles away from his alma mater, Franklin High School. Johnson helped his team to a record of 18-9 as a senior, earning 1st Team All-League, All-City and MVP honors in 2011. He spent time as a pitcher, catcher and infielder for head coach Michael Cody. Johnson graduated from Franklin in 2011.
