Huskies Offense Strikes Early to Defeat the Border Cats

The Duluth Huskies opened up a home and home series against the Thunder Bay Border Cats, getting the 6-4 win on Thursday night.

The Huskies scored in the bottom of the first when Augie Isaacson (Friends) stole home on a first-third double steal.

John Lagattuta (UC Berkeley) and Julian Escobedo (San Diego State) got on base with a pair of singles in the bottom of second. They advanced to second and third on a sacrifice hit by General McArthur (Missouri Baptist). Lagattuta scored on a single from Nick Sogard (Loyola Marymount) and Escobedo scored on a sacrifice fly from Sam Baier (Augustana).

Troy Newell (Western Kentucky) was strong through five innings but gave up six walks. The Border Cats got on the board in the sixth scoring three runs. Two runs coming off of the double by Garrett Saunders (Central College) and one off the single from Gunner Hellstrom (University of Nebraska), scoring Saunders from second.

With Chris Gilbody (Georgetown College) and Kyle Jacobsen (South Carolina) on base, a wild pitch was thrown from Border Cats pitcher Luke Malone (Texas A&M Corpus Cristi), advancing both runners. Justin Mitchell (University of Oklahoma) then hit a single scoring both runners. Then with bases loaded Isaacson singled to score Mitchell from third.

The Border Cats got a run back scoring Saunders from third on a double-play ground ball off the bat of Nick Conti (Eckerd College). That was not enough has Tim Holdagrafer (Cal Ploy Pamona) struck out Ben McConnell (Fort Scott CC) to end the game.

The Huskies will be in action tomorrow as they take on the Thunder Bay Border Cats at Thunder Bay. Game starts 7:05 ET, 6:05 CT.
