Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - The Albany River Rats announced today that goaltender Justin Peters has been recalled to the Carolina Hurricanes, their National Hockey League affiliate, for the first time in his professional career. The River Rats also announced that they have recalled goaltender David Leggio from loan with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL.

Peters, 22, was recalled after Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward sustained a groin injury in the first period of Carolina's game on Sunday against Anaheim. Drafted by the ‘Canes in the second round (38th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Peters has attended Carolina's NHL training camps the past few seasons and he saw his first NHL preseason action on September 24th against the Washington Capitals at the RBC Center when he replaced starter Cam Ward in the middle of the second period. However, as he is reunited with his 2007-08 River Rats tandem partner Michael Leighton, this is the first time in his three-year pro career that he has been recalled to Raleigh.

Over the last month the Blyth, Ontario native turned up his play to emerge as the River Rats number one goalie in a tight competition with teammate Daniel Manzato. Peters made a career-high 55 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Providence Bruins on November 8th, but is 3-1-1-1 in his last six games with a 2.18 goals-against average, a 0.930 save percentage and posted his first shutout of the season on November 22nd in a 1-0 shootout loss at Syracuse.

Leggio, 24, was recalled to Albany and practiced with the team on Tuesday morning at the Times Union Center. The Williamsville, New York native signed a two-way AHL contract with the River Rats on July 24th and attended the Carolina Hurricanes NHL training camp on a free-agent tryout. Leggio was assigned to Albany and participated in the River Rats camp in late September, playing in their first preseason game against Bridgeport. He was loaned to the Everblades on October 5th and has gotten off to a strong start to his first year of professional hockey; in eight games for Florida he is 5-2-1 with a 2.16 goals-against average, a 0.928 save percentage and 2 shutouts. The Clarkson University alum (2004-2008) made his professional and AHL debut on April 13th, 2008 with the Binghamton Senators playing against the Hershey Bears at the Giant Center.

Albany will ring in the month of December with two-straight home games against the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday, December 3rd and Friday, December 5th; both games are scheduled for 7:00 pm face offs at the Times Union Center.
