Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced that defensemen Johnny Boychuk and Matt Lashoff have been recalled to the National Hockey League by the Boston Bruins. With the moves, the P-Bruins have 21 players on their roster, including 14 forwards, five defensemen and two goaltenders.
Boychuk, 24, shares the Providence lead in points with 23 with forwards Martins Karsums and Martin St. Pierre through 22 games, posting four goals and a club-high 19 assists. Boychuk also leads all AHL defensemen in both points and assists. The fifth-year blue-liner was the P-Bruins' Player of the Month in October after totaling 12 points, including 10 assists, in eight games and he was awarded the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week honor on October 20 following a seven-point (g, 6a) three-game stretch. He has six multiple-point outings to his credit this season, two point-streaks of at least four games and leads all P-Bruins with 15 power play points (3g, 12a).
The call-up to the NHL is the second for Boychuk in his career and the first as a member of the Bruins organization. The defenseman enjoyed a scoreless four-game stint with the Colorado Avalanche last season after spending most of the year with the Lake Erie Monsters. In his career, Boychuk has 124 points (31g, 93a) and 349 penalty minutes in 316 AHL games.
Boychuk, acquired by Boston on June 24, 2008 from Colorado in a trade for center Matt Hendricks, was originally drafted by the Avalanche in the second round, 61st overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Since, the Edmonton, Alberta native has played for Colorado, Providence, Lake Erie, the Albany River Rats, Lowell Lock Monsters and Hershey Bears. From 1999-04, Boychuk played parts of five seasons for the Calgary Hitmen and Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League.
Lashoff, 22, gets the call to Boston for the second time this season though he has was a healthy scratch for three games during his previous recall from November 19-27. The fourth-year Bruin has 16 points (4g, 12a) in 18 games for Providence this season, ranking third among AHL defensemen. He enjoyed a five-game point-streak from October 12-24, followed by his best game of the season on November 14 against the Worcester Sharks in which he scored a goal and added three assists for a four-point game and a plus-four rating.
A native of East Greenbush, New York, Lashoff split 2007-08 between Boston and Providence, earning five points (g, 4a) in 18 games for Boston while matching a career-high with 36 points (9g, 27a) for the P-Bruins. In his career, the two-time PlanetUSA AHL All-Star starter has 90 points (25g, 65a) in 149 contests at the AHL level to go along with seven points (g, 6a) in 30 games for Boston.
Prior to being drafted by Boston 22nd overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Lashoff spent three years in the Ontario Hockey League with the Kitchener Rangers.
Providence Bruins season tickets, Flex Tix packages and single game tickets are on sale now for the 2008-09 season. To purchase tickets or to learn more information, call the P-Bruins ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or log on to the team website at providencebruins.com.
