Huntsville wins over Carolina

Huntsville, AL --- Dayton Buller hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift Huntsville to a 5-3 victory over Carolina on Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

Buller's heroics came against reliever Lee Tabor (L, 3-1) after Taylor Green rolled a bunt single down the third base line that bumped against the base for a hit. One out later, Buller connected over the leap of left fielder Brandon Yarbrough for the game-winner. Huntsville won on Monday night on a go-homer by Green also in the 13th inning by the same 5-3 score. Carolina defeated the Stars in 10 innings on Wednesday.

The game never would have reached extra innings were it not for Luis Terrero's monster two-out home run to tie the score. Dave Sappelt, who had another two-hit game, drilled a single to left with two outs against closer Robert Hinton. Terrero bashed the next pitch for a tying homer against one of the ornamental stars adjacent to the scoreboard in left-centerfield.

Carolina (19-21) took the lead in the 12th on a Yarbrough sacrifice fly, with Mike Costanzo scoring on a fantastic hand-first slide ahead of the throw from Lee Haydel in left field. However, in the bottom half, Jerry Gil permitted a leadoff single to pitcher Chris Cody. After a failed sacrifice, Brett Lawrie tripled to right-center to tie the score, but the Stars could not win the game as Gil retired the next two on popouts.

Scott Carroll worked 6 1/3 brilliant innings, allowing just two runs in the seventh. Carroll permitted a first inning double and walk, then promptly retired 16 straight hitters before surrendering a single in the seventh.

Huntsville starter Andre Lamontagne, in just his second start of the season, threw six hitless innings before he was taken down due to a pitch count. Sappelt collected Carolina's first hit, a double to leadoff the seventh inning against Lucas Luetke.

The Mudcats fell five games behind first place Tennessee with the defeat, with Huntsville remaining a game behind the Smokies.

The roadtrip ends Friday night with Tom Cochran (7-5) starting against Wily Peralta at 8:00 PM ET.
