Suns Take Fourth Consecutive Win, 3-2 over Barons

Jacksonville, Fla. - Lee Mitchell ended a sixth inning, eleven-pitch at-bat with a two-run single that plated the tying and winning runs and sent Elih Villanueva to his 12th win, as the Jacksonville Suns (64-46, 24-16) took a 3-2 win over the Birmingham Barons (37-73, 13-27) in front of 5,663 Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Villanueva (12-4) allowed two runs and three hits over eight innings of work with one walk and seven strikeouts for a winning decision. Villanueva lasted seven innings or longer for the 12th time in his league-leading 23rd start. The right-hander extended his league-leading total of innings pitched to 153.

Barons starter Charlie Leesman (2-2) allowed three runs, two earned, with five hits over five and one-thirds innings for the losing decision. Suns reliever Jose Ceda (3) pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Birmingham opened the scoring in the second dinning. Christian Marrero led off with a double, stole third base and scored on a C.J. Retherford ground out for a 1-0 Barons lead.

In the fifth inning Justin Greene hit a two-out, solo home run off Villanueva, increasing the Barons lead at 2-0.

After recording only two hits in the first five innings against Leesman, Jacksonville rallied in the sixth inning. A Lorenzo Scott bunt single, Eduardo Escobar error on an Ozzie Martinez ground ball and Vinny Rottino walk loaded the bases with no outs. Matt Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Scott for a 2-1 game. Lee Mitchell next battled in an 11-pitch at-bat before sending a single to right-centerfield to score Martinez and Rottino for a 3-2 lead.
