PEARL, Miss. - Consecutive errors with two outs in the top of the first inning kept the BayBears alive just long enough to score three times and never look back in a 6-2 victory over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Trustmark Park.
Collin Cowgill walked with two away in the first against Mississippi (48-60, 18-22) starter Randall Delgado (0-3) while Konrad Schmidt also drew a two-out free pass to bring up Bryan Byrne. Byrne tapped a bouncer to first that Mauro Gomez bobbled allowing Taylor Harbin to bat with the bases loaded.
Harbin popped the first pitch he saw foul behind home plate, but catcher Jesus Sucre dropped the ball. On the very next pitch, Harbin tripled off the left-center field fence, unloading the bases and putting the BayBears (59-48, 23-16) up by three.
In the second, the BayBears were quickly able to add to their lead when Jake Elmore singled in front of a sac bunt by Tom Layne (11-5). Evan Frey followed with a triple into the left-center gap, bringing home Elmore for a 4-0 advantage.
Layne was able to cruise with a sizable lead as he becomes just the sixth BayBear pitcher ever to win at least 11 games in a season. He worked through five frames and surrendered two runs on eight hits. The Braves tagged him for four knocks in the third with Tyler Pastornicky's sac fly scoring Donell Linares. Willie Cabrera attempted to bring home Sucre with a single to left, but Ollie Linton gunned him down at the dish to end the third.
Gomez doubled in the fourth inning with one away and scored on a single by Linares, but Sucre bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to finish that threat.
Mississippi captured only one hit the rest of the night as Bryan Augenstein came off the disabled list to fire off two scoreless innings. Bryan Shaw worked a perfect eighth while Daniel Stange set the Braves down in order in the ninth. The BayBears added two more to their lead in the top of the ninth as Frey scored on a passed ball while Schmidt singled home Linton against Jaye Chapman.
The BayBears will battle the Braves at Trustmark Park on Friday night at 7:05 in the rubber game of their five-game set with a return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Suns at 7:05. The BayBears have also announced that Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will be coming to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12 for a special, two-day appearance in Mobile.
