Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - The Houston Dynamo advanced to the quarterfinals of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League with a 2-1 victory over CD Guastatoya this evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. Houston defeated the Guatemalan side 3-1 on aggregate to advance to the quarterfinals of an international competition for the fourth time in club history.
Houston will face Liga MX side Tigres UANL in the quarterfinals of the tournament with the first leg scheduled for 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Inclement weather around the stadium forced a two-hour, 24-minute delay this evening.
Guastatoya scored their only goal of the series in the 72nd minute when forward Isaac Acuña found Aaron Navarro inside the box. The forward's effort took a high bounce off the turf and over Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis.
Houston equalized five minutes later off a classic breakaway run by forward Alberth Elis. La Pantera found forward Mauro Manotas inside the box for a one-touch finish to take a 2-1 aggregate lead.
Manotas secured the series for the Dynamo in the 85th minute off a free kick outside the box. The Colombian's effort curled over the wall past a lunging Jose Calderon to the top corner of the far post.
Guastatoya defender Wilson Pineda forced the first of four first-half saves from Willis with a shot from outside the box in the third minute. The Dynamo goalkeeper finished the game with eight saves.
Acuña was inches away from the Guatemalan side's first goal of the series after a giveaway by the Dynamo defense. Luis Martinez collected the bad pass and found the forward near the penalty spot in the 27th minute, but Acuña's effort hit the cross bar.
Houston's best opportunity of the first half came in the 43rd minute when captain DaMarcus Beasley found Ronaldo Peña inside the box, but his header was saved at the near post and eventually cleared.
Dynamo defender A.J. DeLaGarza found forward Marlon Hairston outside the six-yard box but his header was saved at the far post by the Guastatoya goalkeeper in the 52nd minute.
Elis entered the match in the 60th minute and three minutes into his shift he won a free kick in the final third. Defender Maynor Figueroa took the free kick but his low, driven shot was just wide of the far post.
The Dynamo return to BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday to host Real Salt Lake in Houston's MLS home opener. Tickets for Tuesday's match are on sale now, starting at $24, at HoustonDynamo.com or by phone at 713-276-4625 (GOAL).
