Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Midland RockHounds hit three solo home runs, defeating the Springfield Cardinals for the first time in the four-game series, winning on Wednesday night by a final score of 5-2.

Midland's Steve Stanley led off the ballgame with a home run to right field off Cards starter Chris Lambert, who was making his Springfield debut. Lambert allowed a home run to open the second as well, giving up a home run to Casey Myers, who hit his fourth of the year, and third against the Cards.

Midland's Dallas Braden (3-1) was very strong, working seven innings while allowing just one run on five hits. He stuck out eight men while issuing just two walks.

With the RockHounds leading 2-0, the Cards cut the lead in half in the home-half of the second. With Juan Diaz at first, Aaron Herr extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 straight with a double down the right field line. Diaz scored all the way from first, making it a 2-1 game.

Midland got another run in the third on a sac fly from Jason Perry, taking a 3-1 lead. Lambert issued a one-out walk to Mark Kiger in the fifth inning, then gave up an RBI single to Perry, giving the RockHounds a 4-1 lead.

Andre Ethier homered to right field to open the eighth inning, giving the Hounds a 5-1 advantage. The home run for Ethier is his tenth of the year.

The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, as Papo Bolivar's RBI single chased home Shaun Boyd, who opened the inning with a triple. The Cards had two runners on with the tying run at the plate, but the rally came to an end, as Travis Hanson fouled out to left fielder Andre Ethier, who doubled up Papo Bolivar at first base, ending the inning.

The Cards went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning, as Alex Santos picked up his fifth save of the year. Cody Haerther, making his debut after being called up from Palm Beach, finished the night at 0-4, flying out at the wall in left field to end it.

Lambert (0-1) worked a total of five innings, allowing four runs on six hits. The 2004 first round draft pick walked two and struck out two. Josh Pearce pitched four solid innings in relief, allowing just one run on three hits.

The Cards see their brief two-game winning streak come to an end, as their overall record falls to 25-28. Midland improves to 33-20 with the win. The Cards send Jordan Pals (2-4) to the mound on Thursday night, as he faces Midland's Steven Bondurant (3-3). Game time is 7:10 and gates open at 6:00.
