Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Midland rapped out 16 hits against three Corpus Christi pitchers while defeating the Hooks 11-2 Monday before 6,207.

The RockHounds are 19-18 in the second half of Texas League play. The Hooks slipped to 12-24. Midland outscored Corpus Christi 42-12 while sweeping the four-game series.

Tommy Everidge, Sean Doolittle and Frank Martinez had three hits each for the visitors. Everidge had the final Midland salvo of the night, a two-run ninth-inning homer off the batter's eye in dead center.

Second baseman Justin Sellers was the only RockHound without an RBI.

The RockHounds wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead. Javier Herrera led off with a double to left, was sacrificed to third by Sellers and scored when Aaron Cunningham reached on an error.

Midland upped its advantage to 4-0 in the fourth. Herrera's two-run single highlighted a four-hit flurry off Hooks starter Tip Fairchild (2-7).

Corpus Christi third baseman Chris Johnson, in the lineup for the first time since Friday (flu), immediately responded by blasting his 12th home run of 2008 over the berm in left field.

But Midland countered with four more runs in a five-hit fifth to chase Fairchild, who permitted 10 hits and three walks over four-plus innings. The first six RockHounds reached base before Sean Walker retired three straight. He went on to work three scoreless frames before handing the ball to Chris Blazek.

Ole Sheldon's RBI single during the sixth closed the gap to 8-2, but Midland took the run back two innings later when Martinez stroked a sacrifice liner to left.

Jason Windsor (1-0) covered the first five frames for San Antonio, allowing two hits and three walks. He struck out three. Justin Dowdy and Jared Lansford pitched two innings apiece.

San Antonio visits Whataburger Field for the first of three games Tuesday. Corpus Christi's Bud Norris (3-4) faces southpaw Steve Garrison (7-5).
