Tulsa Drillers News Release

July 28, 2008 - First baseman Mark Trumbo enjoyed a memorable Double A debut Monday night at Drillers Stadium. Trumbo was promoted from Class A Rancho Cucamonga and joined the Arkansas Travelers just a couple of hours before their game with the Tulsa Drillers. With only two hours of sleep, the 22-year-old went a perfect 5-5 with two home runs to lead the Travs to a 12-5 win over the Drillers.

The Travelers scored their 12 runs on 16 hits in route to a 3-1 series win against the Drillers.

The loss dropped Tulsa below .500 for the first time in the second half. At 18-19, the Drillers are now five games behind first-place Northwest Arkansas in the North Division standings.

An RBI double by Coby Smith gave Arkansas a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Trumbo got his second hit of the night with a leadoff double to begin the fourth. The hit opened the gates for a big 5-run inning against Tulsa starter Chaz Roe that gave the Travs a 6-0 lead.

Trumbo upped it 7-0 with his first home run of the night to begin the fifth. Chris Pettit made it back-to-back homers to increase the margin to eight runs.

The Drillers managed just one hit in the first four innings against Travelers' starting pitcher Dan Denham. They finally go to Denham for a run in the bottom of the fifth as Daniel Carte singled and scored on a base hit by Eduardo Cornejo. Corey Smith got the run back when he led off the top of the sixth with his 16th homer of the season.

Tulsa got back-to-back homers of its own in the seventh as Justin Nelson and Rick Guarno hit consecutive shot to trim the Travs' lead to 9-3.

The duo of Trumbo and Pettit struck again in the eighth, hitting consecutive homes for the second time in the game. Trumbo hit a two-run blast to right, and Pettit followed with a solo shot to left-center field.

A two-run ninth inning for the Drillers closed the scoring, with Guarno and Cornejo picking up RBI singles.

Denham worked seven innings to improve his record to 9-8. Roe was tagged for eight runs, but only four were earned. The loss dropped his record to 3-2.

The Drillers will now begin a three-game series with the first-place Northwest Arkansas Naturals Tuesday night at Drillers Stadium. Alan Johnson (3-10, 5.01 ERA) will pitch the opener for Tulsa against Blake Wood (3-5, 6.58 ERA) of the Naturals. Starting time is scheduled for 7:05PM.
