Soo Greyhounds News Release
ST. CATHARINES, ON- The Soo Greyhounds put a halt to their scoreless drought on Thursday, but getting within a goal of the Niagara IceDogs would be as close as they would get.
KEIGAN GOETZ scored for the Hounds at 5:56 of the third period, ending their shutout skid at one hundred and five minutes and fifty-six seconds, before falling 4-1 to the IceDogs.
The victory by Niagara capped off the season series with the Hounds with each club winning on home ice.
"Tonight it was more of a case of finishing for us. I thought we generated quality chances in the second, and quite a few in the third actually. I thought we were generating and we've been working on a few things to try and generate and I saw some positives that way but in the end you can generate them but you have to finish them off" stated Head Coach Drew Bannister when asked about his team's offensive woes, atleast the finishing aspect of their game.
"One of the issues tonight was not finishing when we had an opportunity to" added Bannister.
Niagara would open the scoring and tally the only goal of the first period when Brendan Perlini swung out to centre ice before picking up speed and entering the zone before firing around a Hounds defenceman and past BRANDON HALVERSON on the IceDogs first shot of the game.
Midway through the period, HAYDEN VERBEEK worked past his man on the win creating a 2-on-1 in close but had his shot foiled by the glove of Brent Moran leaving Niagara leading 1-0 through the first period.
Less than a minute into the second period, HALVERSON came up big stopping the first IceDogs shot and then putting a left pad on Jordan Maletta's rebound attempt keeping the game at a single goal.
The game became a two-goal difference (0-2) at 5:33 of the period when Blake Siebenaler's right point shot got through for a 2-0 IceDogs lead.
The Hounds had two quality chances midway through the period but failed to capitalize.
First, BRYCE YETMAN was sprung in alone only to have a pad stop turn him aside before BORIS KATCHOUK's backhand wraparound was stopped before the rebound cleared just out of the reach of HAYDEN VERBEEK.
Niagara led 2-0 through forty minutes.
Early in the third the Hounds pressed again as BORIS KATCHOUK free-wheeled around the zone before driving between the circles only to be stopped by the glove of Moran.
KEIGAN GOETZ would put the Hounds on the board at 5:56 of the period standing in front of the IceDogs goal and knocking the puck in for his 1st goal of the season, cutting the deficit now to 2-1.
"I thought we did it more today, than Saturday where I thought we played a lot on the perimeter there was no question about that. We see with our one goal we scored tonight we went to the tough area, we banged it in" said Bannister when asked about his team's need to go to the tougher areas of the ice.
While the Hounds held the IceDogs shotless through the opening 8:20 of the period, it would be the home side extending the lead shortly thereafter.
Just over the halfway point, Christpher Paquette moved the puck from the boards and to the middle of the zone where Anthony DiFruscia capped off the odd-man situation at 10:45 regaining the IceDogs two goal cushion.
Then with just over a mintue to play and the Greyhounds BRANDON HALVERSON on the bench for the extra attacker, Josh Ho-Sang outskated the Hounds defence before depositing the empty net goal sealing the Hounds fate on the night.
Despite outshooting Niagara over the final two periods, and 33-26 overall, the loss dropped the Hounds to 9-11-3-0 on the season.
The Hounds were 0-for-4 on the powerplay and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
"Well we didn't score, but I thought we were better. We generated but didn't score tonight.
I thought it was better than we were against Peterborough. There were more positive signs than the last game for sure" concluded Bannister regarding his clubs powerplay.
Bannister also confirmed that goaltender JOSEPH RAAYMAKERS is expected to get the start in Erie on Saturday.
