Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
PITTSBURGH (March 13, 2015) - The Pittsburgh Riverhounds' pre-season preparations continued Friday with a 4-0 win over Duquesne University at Highmark Stadium.
Miro Cabrilo notched a first-half double to give the Hounds a commanding lead that reflected the team's early dominance. Kevin Kerr and Kene Eze completed the scoring after the break.
"We moved the ball faster than we have all pre-season," said Riverhounds head coach Mark Steffens. "Our positional interchanging worked really well too.
"That first 10 minutes was the best we've played."
It took six minutes for Cabrilo to notch his first goal of the pre-season. The lively Kerr swerved past Duquesne's Bryan Fegley on the right flank before floating a cross toward the back post. Cabrilo climbed above the Dukes defense to send his header inside goalkeeper Evan Kozlowski's right post.
Cabrilo could have doubled the lead on 23 minutes when Kerr found him on the edge of Duquesne's 18-yard box. The former Robert Morris University forward sliced his shot wide of the near post.
Another chance was missed on the half-hour when Canadian full-back Tyler Pasher found his countryman Cabrilo with a cross from the left. The forward's slight hesitation allowed defender Patrick Sullivan to block his shot.
Pittsburgh's lead was extended on the stroke of half-time. Kerr's burst into the Dukes penalty area resulted in a loose ball finding its way to Cabrilo's feet. The 22-year-old steered a low shot inside the far corner.
Kerr was the beneficiary of a similar run 10 minutes into the second half when he raced through on Kozlowski's goal. The Scottish midfielder remained composed to loft a cute finish over the exposed goalkeeper.
New signing Eze completed the scoring on 76 minutes with a sharp finish on the rebound after Kozlowski pushed away Mike Green's header.
The Hounds return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when Mid-American Conference champion Akron visits Highmark Stadium. Admission is free.
