BOWLING GREEN, Kent. - On a muggy Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark, a pitcher's duel broke out as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (1-0, 39-30) sneaked, 2-1, past the Lansing Lugnuts (0-1, 32-38).

Sean Bierman (Win, 3-3) pitched five innings for the Hot Rods in the start, allowing just one unearned run in five innings of work to earn his first win since April 13th. He struck out three Lugnuts bats and walked four, issuing a free pass to Dalton Pompey three times individually.

Matt Spann, Ryan Garton and Matt Ramsey combined to toss four scoreless frames the rest of the way to seal the win for the home side.

After Carlos Ramirez led off the ninth inning with a double to right-center to put the game-tying run in scoring position, Ramsey got the next three hitters in order, striking out Kellen Sweeney to end the game and earn his fifth save of the year.

The Lugnuts took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Dwight Smith, Jr. walked, moved to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on an error by first baseman Patrick Leonard.

Bowling Green struck back in the bottom of the second inning when Marty Gantt came around to score from first on an RBI double by Joey Rickard, evening the score, 1-1.

The go-ahead run came home in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Hot Rods. Andrew Toles led off with a double and then scored when an errant throw by Sweeney went into right-field, giving Bowling Green the 2-1 lead.

Lansing starter Taylor Cole (Loss, 4-5) was on the short end of the duel, allowing two earned runs in his five frames on the mound. He scattered 10 hits to the Hot Rods, striking out two and also issuing two walks.

Kramer Champlin and Wil Browning threw three scoreless innings of relief to keep Lansing in the game, but the Hot Rods' pitching proved to be too much.

Bowling Green has allowed just 12 runs in seven games against the Lugnuts this season, winning six of the matchups.

Game two of the three-game series is set for an 8:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Ben White (4-3, 2.79) will take the mound for Lansing against Hot Rods' lefty Blake Snell (2-5, 3.88).
