Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
MIDLAND, TX - The RockHounds scored seven unanswered runs Wednesday night but Chris Devenski countered with four shutout frames of relief as Corpus Christi captured an 8-7 triumph at Security Bank Ballpark.
The Hooks (39-18) have won nine of their last 11 against Midland (29-29) and lead the RockHounds by 10 1/2 games with 13 to play in the Texas League South first-half race. Corpus Christi's magic number to clinch a postseason berth is three.
Heading into the home fourth, the Hooks owned an 8-0 lead and Michael Feliz had retired nine of the 10 batters he faced. After Feliz dispatched the lead-off hitter, Josh Whitaker belted a 2-1 pitch into the Hooks' bullpen, tucked inside the left-field corner, to put Midland on the board. Back-to-back doubles by Renato Nunez and Ryon Healy made it 8-2.
Feliz returned for the fifth but failed to record an out. Two free passes and a pair of singles cut the Corpus Christi edge to five and loaded the bases. Whitaker greeted Travis Ballew with a three-run double off the tall fence in left. Matt Olson was next and cracked a two-bagger into the right-field alley, bringing the Hounds to within a run.
Devenski entered with two on and no outs. His first pitch sailed past Roberto Pena, pushing both runners into scoring position. The 24-year-old right-hander retired the next three batters, two via strikeouts to preserve the Hooks lead.
Devenski worked around three hits and two walks, stranding seven on base. He fanned six, throwing 45 of 70 pitches for strikes. Devenski is now 7-0 and leads all minor league pitchers with a 0.65 ERA.
Jandel Gustave got the first two outs in the ninth with ease and then bypassed an error and two singles to secure his seventh save. Conrad Gregor recorded the final out by making a back-handed stop at first base on a smash off the bat of Chad Oberacker.
Corpus Christi augmented its 1-0 start with a five-run second. Triples by Gregor and Andrew Aplin bookended the rally. Pena's two-run double highlighted the barrage against Tim Atherton (2-3).
Pena and Tony Kemp reached to begin the fourth on a single and a walk, respectively. Teoscar Hernandez stroked a line drive to left that was dropped by Matt Angle, allowing Pena to score for a 7-0 margin. Colin Moran punched a two-out RBI single into left for Corpus Christi's final run.
Kemp went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, extending his club-best hit streak to 13 games. He leads the Texas League in batting average (.358) and on-base percentage (.457).
Rehabbing Astro Brad Peacock and lefty Josh Hader (1-3, 3.07) are slated to pitch for the Hooks Thursday night. Midland hands the ball to Jake Sanchez (4-4, 5.31) This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
