Hooks Take the Fifth

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

FRISCO, Texas - Drew Meyer's two-run double and Drew Locke's run-scoring triple highlighted Corpus Christi's eight-run top half of the fifth in Friday's 10-3 win over Frisco in the opener of this four-game series at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

The result gives the Hooks a 3-0 record to start the second half.

Felix Molina opened the fifth by drawing a four-pitch walk and went to second on Mitch Einertson's single. Wladimir Sutil, unable to move the runners with a bunt, lined out softly to short. That brought Meyer to the plate, and he drilled a 2-0 pitch to the gap in left-center to send Molina and Einertson home for a 4-1 Corpus Christi lead.

Locke followed with a line drive that rattled around in the left field corner and skipped past Tim Smith onto the warning track in left. Locke's first triple of the season plated Meyer to make it 5-1 Hooks.

Jimmy Van Ostrand and Collin DeLome added RBI singles, and with the help of a walk and two Frisco errors, the Hooks were up 8-1. Einertson capped the stanza with a bloop two-run single into right-center, giving Corpus Christi a commanding 10-1 advantage.

The Hooks established a new season record with their eight-run fifth. Eight is also a new season high for runs allowed in a half inning by the RoughRiders.

Sergio Perez had yet another strong outing this month. Perez (6-6) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings to get the win. He walked two and equaled his season high with six strikeouts. In five June starts, Perez is 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA.

Blake Beavan (0-1) was charged with nine runs, six earned, during his 4.1 innings on the hill. He walked two and fanned two. Reliever Zach Phillips allowed one unearned run over 4.2 innings in his Double-A debut for the RoughRiders.

Meyer doubled twice to increase his team-leading total to 21. Locke knocked in two runs to become the first player in the minors this season to reach 70 RBI's. The only other player in professional baseball with 70 RBI's is St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols.

Casey Hudspeth (4-5, 5.89) takes the mound for the Hooks in game two of the series. He'll be opposed by Frisco southpaw Michael Ballard (1-4, 4.91) in a 7:05 start Saturday night.
