Springfield Cardinals News Release

Just one night after handling the Tulsa Drillers and claiming the First Half North Division Pennant, the Springfield Cardinals battered the Drillers for a second straight night, earning their third shutout of the year with a 9-0 win at Drillers Stadium on Saturday evening.

Cards' starter Ryan Kulik enjoyed his finest Double-A outing, tossing eight scoreless frames, while his offense pounded out nine runs and 15 hits.

Springfield jumped on Tulsa starter Keith Weiser (4-5) in the first inning for four runs, capitalizing on a two-out error. Daniel Descalso's RBI double plated Pete Kozma, giving the Redbirds a 1-0 lead. An error by first baseman Jeff Kindel opened the door for three unearned runs, with Matt Arburr's two-run double highlighting the four-run inning.

The bats exploded for four more in the third, as Mike Folli and Antone DeJesus both had a two-run double, making it an 8-0 game.

Arburr homered in the seventh, capping the Springfield scoring against reliever Xavier Cedeno at 9-0.

Kulik (2-5) allowed just five hits without allowing a walk over eight innings. Tyler Norrick knocked off the rust with a scoreless ninth. The left-hander had not been used over the last few days and struggled with his command, issuing three walks in the final frame. Norrick battled through it though, striking out the side and leaving the bases loaded to preserve the shutout.

The Redbirds look for their fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon, sending Lance Lynn (6-2) to the mound against rehabbing Colorado Rockies left-hander Greg Smith (0-1). Game time on Sunday is 2:05pm.

The Cards return to Hammons Field on Thursday, July 2nd for a six-game home stand. Don't miss out on Fireworks on both Friday, July 3rd and Saturday, July 4th. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com.
