Tulsa Drillers News Release
One night after winning the first-half North Division title, the Springfield Cardinals carried the momentum in Saturday and defeated the Tulsa Drillers 9-0 at Drillers Stadium. The Cardinals scored four times in the top of the first inning and were never threatened.
The loss was the third in a row for the Drillers and leaves them at 0-3 in the second half.
Springfield's huge night offensively was complimented with an impressive outing by starting pitcher Ryan Kulik. Not only did every Springfield starter get a hit, but Kulik tossed eight innings without giving up a run before Tyler Norrick came in to work a hitless ninth. The Cardinals managed to outhit the Drillers 15 to 5.
The Cardinals' four-run first inning was more than enough in the shutout. Pete Kozma singled with one out and stole second before he scored on Daniel Descalso's double to center. An error benefited the Cards efforts, as Tony Cruz reached on two-out error by first basemen Jeff Kindel that also allowed Descalso to score from second. After James Rapoport singled, he and Cruz came home on Matt Arburr's double to center to make it 4-0.
Springfield plated four runs in the third to increase the lead to 8-0. Steven Hill singled, Cruz singled and Rapoport walked to load the bases. Mike Folli's double to scored Hill and Cruz before Antonio DeJesus' double to right brought home Rapoport and Folli to cap the inning.
The Cardinals completed the scoring in the top of the seventh when Arburr homered over the center field wall to make it 9-0.
Keith Weiser (5-6) took the loss for Tulsa. He delivered seven strikeouts but allowed 11 hits with 5 earned runs in 5 innings of work.
The loss marked the sixth shutout the Drillers have suffered this year. It was also the second time Tulsa has been blanked by Springfield.
The Drillers look to secure their first victory of the second half on Sunday afternoon as they continue their series with the Cardinals. Greg Smith (0-1, 13.50 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa against Springfield's Lance Lynn (6-2, 4.04 ERA) at 2:05 p.m. in Drillers Stadium.
