Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(SPRINGFIELD, MO) - Corpus Christi went into game three in Springfield looking to win their first road series of the second half but came up a little short in the hands of Cardinals' starting pitcher Jeremy Cummings.

Springfield jumped on top of Hooks' starter Chris Sampson right off the bat. Travis Hanson lined a triple to right field and was brought in to score on a Tyler Minges sacrifice fly to center field giving them the lead in the first inning.

The Cardinals did not stop there as they scored a run in the second inning and got a pair of homers by Pete Zocolillo and Aaron Herr. With the home run, Herr has now hit a home run in his last 4 games. Springfield was then gifted with two runs in the seventh when Mike Rodriguez dropped a routine pop out with two outs allowing Herr to score from second. Bolivar then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Travis Hanson single.

Cardinals' starting pitcher Cummings held the Hooks to only 4 hits through seven innings. Hooks' center fielder Josh Anderson had two of the teams 4 hits off of Cummings.

Anderson left the game in the top of the 4th inning after Cardinals' second baseman Aaron Herr landed on his left hand while turning a double play on Tommy Whiteman. Anderson was replaced by John Fagan who went into right field moving Carlos Rodriguez to left field and M. Rodriguez to center field.

Corpus Christi broke up a hitless streak of 15 batters when Wade Robinson got on first with an infield single off reliever Anthony Ferrari. The hit sparked a bit of a rally after Ferrari walked pinch hitter Dax Norris and gave up a single to load the bases to John Fagan. Ferrari would then strike out Whiteman on a full count and walk Hector Gimenez scoring Robinson for the Hooks first run of the game. After the walk Ferrari was replaced by Cory Doyne who got Carlos Rodriguez to strike out and end the inning.

Doyne would have his own problems in the 9th as the Hooks would once again put runners on base trying to ignite a much needed rally. Mike Rodriguez led off the inning with a single up the middle to center field. Doyne then walked Mark Saccomanno and Eric Riggs to the bases with no outs. Robinson then grounded into a fielder's choice getting Riggs out at second base but scoring on the play was M. Rodriguez. Saccomanno then scored after Doyne threw a wild pitch also advancing Robinson to second. Robinson advanced to third on a line out by pinch hitter Junior Zamora and Fagan ended the game on a strikeout.

Hooks' starter Sampson went 6 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 5 runs which 4 were earned before giving the ball to reliever Blake Allen. Sampson did not give up a walk and struck out 4 batters. Sampson suffered the loss and fell to (2-11) on the season.

Springfield starter Cummings improved his record to (2-2) with the win as Doyne got his fourth save of the season.

With the 6-3 loss Corpus Christi fell to (3-4) in the second half and (30-48) on the season as Springfield improved to (3-4) in the second half and (39-39) overall.

The Hooks return to Corpus Christi Friday July 1 to begin a 5 game series against the Midland RockHounds. On the mound for the Hooks in game one will be RHP Jason Hirsh (5-6). The RockHounds will have LHP Steven Bondurant (5-5) on the mound.
