Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals finished their seven-game home stand with a victory on Wednesday night, knocking off the Corpus Christi Hooks by a score of 6-3 at Hammons Field.
Cards starting pitcher Jeremy Cummings (2-2) went seven scoreless frames, allowing just four hits in picking up the win. Cummings retired the final 14 men that he faced, snapping a personal two-game losing streak.
Offensively, things clicked early for Springfield, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Travis Hanson would triple with one out and then score on Tyler Minges' sac fly to center field. In the second, Pete Zoccolillo doubled to open the frame, then scored on a one-out single by Aaron Herr, making it 2-0.
Zoccolillo and Herr both homered in the fourth against Hooks starter Chris Sampson (2-11). Zoccolillo's solo shot to right field was his first since joining the Cards. Herr's home run was his 11th of the year, giving him homers in four straight games, becoming the first Cards player to pull that off.
The Cards tallied a couple of unearned runs in the seventh, taking a 6-0 lead. Aaron Herr, who reached after getting hit to open the inning would score all the way from first when Papo Bolivar's pop fly to center field was dropped by Mike Rodriguez. Bolivar would later score on a Travis Hanson single, giving Hanson a team-best 45 RBIs.
Corpus Christi made things interesting, getting a run in the seventh against Cards reliever Anthony Ferrari. A walk to Hector Gimenez forced in a run, making it 6-1. Cory Doyne would come out of the bullpen to strike out Carlos Rodriguez, retiring the side with the bases loaded. Doyne struggled in the ninth, surrendering a pair of runs to make it 6-3. With the tying run in the on-deck circle though, Doyne fanned John Fagan, earning his fourth save of the year.
Another sell-out crowd of 8,236 witnessed Wednesday night's win, marking the fifth time in the seven-game home stand that the fans of Springfield sold out Hammons Field. Our thanks goes out to the Springfield community for helping to sell out Hammons Field a total of 18 times already during our 2005 Inaugural season.
The Cards improve to 3-4 in the second half and 38-39 overall. Springfield takes a day off on Thursday and returns to action this Friday night in Wichita against the first place Wranglers. Game time on Friday has been changed to 7:30, as Chris Lambert (0-2) takes on Derrin Ebert (3-2). The Cardinals return home to Hammons Field on Wednesday, July 6th against the Tulsa Drillers.
