Nin dazzles Roughriders

Tulsa Drillers News Release

Two nights after facing Thomas Diamond, the Texas Rangers top pitching prospect, the Tulsa Drillers were matched Wednesday night against the Rangers number two prospect in John Danks in the finale of a 3-game series with Frisco RoughRiders. Early in the game, Danks lived-up to his billing, but in the end, he was overshadowed by Drillers starter Sandy Nin. Nin threw a 9-inning complete game as the Drillers beat the RoughRiders 5-1 for their second straight victory.

Danks was dominating early in the contest, retiring the first ten Drillers hitters of the game. The streak ended when Jeff Salazar walked with one out in the top of the fourth inning. Jud Thigpen followed with Tulsa's first hit of the game. After Alvin Colina grounded out to put runners at second and third, Sean Barker dropped a double into left field to score both Salazar and Thigpen. Corey Slavik increased the lead to 3-0 with a line single to right that scored Barker.

Frisco answered with an unearned run off Nin in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Brandon Larson reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Doug Bernier. Vince Sinisi brought Larson home with a single to right field to cut the Tulsa lead to 3-1.

Barker struck again in the sixth inning for the Drillers. After Colina led off with a single, Barker belted his 8th homer of the year to give Tulsa a 5-1 lead.

Nin made sure the lead held up. After the run-scoring single by Sinisi in the fourth, the right-hander allowed only a 7th inning double to Sinisi and a 9th inning single to Joaquin Arias.

Nin joins Jon Asahina as the only Drillers pitcher to work a 9-inning complete game this season. Overall, Nin allowed six hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four. The win improves his record to 2-4.

Danks surrendered six hits and five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. The loss levels his won-loss record at 2-2.

Barker led the Drillers offense with 2 hits in 4 at-bats and 4 runs batted in. Bernier also added two hits for Tulsa.

The win allowed the Drillers to take the series from the RoughRiders 2 games to 1.

Tulsa will have Thursday off before beginning a 5-game series with the Arkansas Travelers Friday night at Drillers Stadium. Zack Parker (9-3, 3.21 ERA) will try to become the first 10-game winner in the Texas League this season. The Travelers will send Joe Saunders (5-4, 4.25 ERA) to the mound. Game time on Friday will be 7:05PM.
