Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Hunter Renfroe's pair of solo home runs off Kyle Westwood enabled San Antonio to salvage a doubleheader split with Corpus Christi Sunday at Whataburger Field before 5,192.
Game 1 - Corpus Christi 2, San Antonio 1
Mark Appel (5-1) struck out six in a complete-game effort as the Hooks defeated San Antonio.
While Appel twirled Corpus Christi's first complete game of 2015, the home club climbed 28 games over .500 (48-20) for the first time in team history.
Appel, the 2013 No. 1 overall draft pick from Stanford, allowed four hits and walked none. Sixty of his 91 pitches found the strike zone.
San Antonio capitalized on a Hooks gaffe to score an unearned run in the first. Lead-off man Travis Jankowski reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jio Mier and later crossed when Renfroe singled into right field.
Corpus Christi responded with an unearned run of its own. Teoscar Hernandez singled, stole second, advanced to third when catcher Griff Erickson threw the ball away, and home via Colin Moran's sacrifice fly.
Another sac fly - this one off the bat of Jon Kemmer - pushed the Hooks ahead for good during the third. Chan-Jong Moon's opening infield single preceded Justin Hancock's walk of Hernandez. After Moon and Hernandez executed a double steal, Kemmer skied out to left.
Hancock fell to 6-3.
Game 2 - San Antonio 3, Corpus Christi 1
Hernandez again scored the Hooks' first run in the first. The center fielder hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Moon (lead-off walk) at second. Aaron Northcraft's wild pitch wasn't immediately located by catcher Adolfo Reina, and Hernandez raced all the way to third. Kemmer's single to left picked him up.
San Antonio leveled two innings later, Luis Domoromo and Jankowski singling and doubling, respectively, off Westwood (5-3) before Jose Rondon's RBI ground out. The Missions moved up 2-1 in the fourth, Renfroe hitting his fourth home run of 2015 on an 0-1 offering from Westwood.
Renfroe's towering blast into the Hooks bullpen in left-center provided sixth-inning insurance as Corpus Christi fell for just the third time in 16 games.
Stephen Kohlscheen (2-0) earned the victory, retiring all six batters he faced and striking out three in relief of starter Northcraft. The two combined to retire 11 consecutive Hooks. Despite walking Moran and Mier, Tayron Guerrero covered the seventh for his sixth save.
San Antonio improved to 30-39.
The I-37 Series continues Monday as Corpus Christi sends Chris Devenski (7-1) against Casey Kelly (1-4). Mrs Baird's presents $1 Hot Dogs and Soda. Faith & Family Night is brought to you by TLC Complete Care.
