Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - After 1B Patrick Wisdom's game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, the Tulsa Drillers scored three runs in the top of the 10th to edge the Springfield Cardinals, 5-2, in 10 innings before 5,106 fans at Hammons Field on Father's Day Sunday.
All-Star C Michael Ohlman went 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI sacrifice fly, extending his hitting streak to 18 games and matching the record for the longest hitting streak in Springfield Cardinals history (accomplished four previous times).
Following a quick and scoreless top of the first from LHP Jimmy Reed, the Cardinals (30-39) opened an early advantage in the bottom of the first. Facing RHP Jharel Cotton in his Double-A debut, All-Star CF Charlie Tilson worked a leadoff walk. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from LF Mike O'Neill, Tilson took third on a sharp single by All-Star RF Nick Martini. Ohlman then skied an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field, enabling Tilson to tag and score for the 1-0 Springfield lead.
Reed kept the narrow advantage intact through his first five scoreless innings, limiting the Drillers (29-38) to just six hits while tallying three strikeouts.
However, Tulsa broke through against Reed in the top of the sixth. 1B Lars Anderson worked a walk to start the stanza, before Reed battled back with his fourth strikeout of the game. After a single from RF Yadir Drake put two men on, both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. 2B Nate Samson then brought both home with a two-run double to right-center, swinging the Drillers into the 2-1 lead.
After Reed wrapped up his night with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, LHP Ryan Sherriff took over on the mound. In his return from the Disabled List, Sherriff dealt a scoreless eighth and ninth, keeping the Cardinals within just one run heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Tulsa RHP Jacob Rhame (W, 1-2) entered the game to start the bottom of the ninth and retired the frame's first out, but then 1B Patrick Wisdom struck. Wisdom unloaded the game-tying solo shot, his seventh homer of the year and fourth of the week, to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.
The Drillers, though, responded right away with three runs in the top of the 10th against LHP Iden Nazario (L, 0-3). With two away, Anderson kept the inning alive with a double. After a walk from LF Brian Burgamy, both runners advanced ninety feet on a wild pitch. Drake the pulled a two-run double to left-center, bringing in both runners for the 4-2 lead. Samson came up next and promptly plated Drake with an RBI single to shallow left field, increasing the Drillers advantage to 5-2.
The Cardinals came out swinging in the bottom of the 10th with singles from Tilson and Martini, but RHP Ralston Cash (S, 1) induced a game-ending double play and the Drillers escaped with the 5-2 win in 10 frames.
