While the RockHounds would have preferred the celebration to have come elsewhere, the Corpus Christi Hooks officially captured the Texas League South Division title Friday night, defeating the RockHounds, 3-1, at Security Bank Ballpark.
The Hooks are more than deserving of the first half crown, now standing 23 games over .500 (41-28) with the win, and completely dominating the half. Over the course of their four-game sweep at Rocky Town, the Hooks closed out each of their three division rivals (Frisco, San Antonio and the RockHounds, in that order). All the more impressive, Corpus clinched the title with 10 days left in the half.
After a pair of games dominated by offense, Friday night's game featured pitching and defense. In his Double-A debut, Joe Musgrove (see below) went seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits, with Renato Nuñez's solo home run providing the 'Hounds' only scoring. Musgrove, who had not pitched about the Rookie and Short-A levels in his first four pro seasons, has rocketed up the Houston Astros' organizational ladder in 2015, pitching at his third level. He opened the season with Single-A Quad Cities and moved up to the Advanced-A level with the California League Lancaster JetHawks before being promoted to the (Double-A) Hooks.
RockHounds starter Chris Jensen looked much more like the 2014 Texas League All-Star who helped lead the 'Hounds to the league championship, recording a quality start. Chris allowed two runs (just one earned) on six hits over seven innings of work. The Hooks added an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Bobby Wahl.
