Arkansas Travelers News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Corpus Christi Hooks hit three home runs and struck out 12 batters during a 7-3 defeat of the Arkansas Travelers on Sunday night at Whataburger Field. Koby Clemens's three-run bomb (14) in the first inning was the big hit, but Jon Gaston (4) and Jhon Florentino (1) hit back-to-back shots in the third inning. The Travs were led by Kevin Ramos with three base hits including a double and a run batted in, but they left 11 base runners and finished 2-for-11 with a runner in scoring position.
After winning two in a row, the Travs are knocked back to a 21-32 record while the Hooks improve to 28-27.
The Travs jumped on top for the second night in a row in the first inning against Hooks righty Jared Wells (3-1). He issued a leadoff walk to Carlos Colmenares, one of five walks Wells allowed in a five-inning performance. Colmenares stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ivan Contreras. Ryan Mount, playing his first game of the road trip after bruising his right elbow last Monday, dropped an RBI single to left field giving the Travs a 1-0 lead. Wells then walked Roberto Lopez, but got out of the inning when Brian Walker grounded into a double play.
Corpus Christi wasted no time in getting to Michael Anton (2-5) who walked consecutive batters in front of Clemens, who ripped the next pitch over the left field wall for a 3-1 Hooks lead.
Anton gave up a pair of two-out base hits in the second inning with T.J. Steele doubling and scoring on a single by German Duran for a 4-1 Hooks lead.
When Gaston and Florentino hit their back-to-back homers in the third inning the Hooks had a 6-1 lead. Anton's final line read six runs on nine base hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. In suffering the loss, Anton has gone six starts without a win.
The Travs had their chance to get back into the game in the fourth inning when Wells allowed two runs but left the bases loaded. Jeremy Moore hit a one-out double and scored when Ramos singled to left field. A single by right fielder Richard Cates moved Ramos to second base, then Wells lost command walking Colmenares and Contreras to force in a run. But Wells left the bases loaded when he struck out Mount for the third out.
Wells finished his appearance by catching a hard line drive comebacker off the bat of Efren Navarro and doubling Moore off first base to end the fifth inning.
The Travs managed no runs and just two base hits over the final four innings. Hooks relievers Nelson Payano and Henry Villar each threw two shutout innings to close the game.
Time of game was 2:53 and the paid attendance was 4,754.
The Travs six-game road trip concludes Monday night at 7:05 p.m. They send right hander Tim Kiely (4-5, 4.55) to the mound against Hooks lefty Douglas Arguello (6-3, 3.07).
