Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Koby Clemens, Jon Gaston and Jhon Florentino homered as Corpus Christi beat Arkansas 7-3 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 4,754.
At 28-27, the Hooks are five games back of Texas League South Division-leading Frisco with 15 games remaining in the first half. Arkansas dropped to 21-32.
Arkansas manufactured the game's first run in its first opportunity against Jared Wells. Lead-off man Carlos Colmenares drew a base on balls, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ivan Contreras and home when Ryan Mount lined a single to right field.
Travelers starter Michael Anton walked two of the first three batters he faced in the home first and clean-up hitter Clemens made him pay with a three-run bomb to left. Clemens' 14 home runs lead the Texas League.
The Hooks tagged Anton for a two-out run an inning later. T.J. Steele doubled down the left-field line and sprinted home on German Duran's single the same direction.
The situation deteriorated even further for Anton in the third. Gaston took him deep to right on a 2-0 pitch with two gone in the third to make it 5-1. The next batter, Florentino, went the other way at 2-2 for his first long ball of 2010.
Arkansas used a combination of clutch hitting and Wells' sudden control issues to post a pair during the fourth. Kevin Ramos' two-out infield single plated Jeremy Moore, who'd stroked a one-out double to left-center. Three batters later, Contreras coaxed a bases-loaded walk, scoring Ramos.
Gaston made it 7-3 Hooks immediately after the seventh-inning stretch. He doubled to right-center and achieved home when Ismael Carmona tried an errant pick-off attempt bobbled and lost by Moore in center field.
Anton (2-5) failed to make it out of the fifth. He exited after Jimmy Van Ostrand's second double of the night. Anton surrendered nine hits, walked two and struck out two.
Wells (3-1) worked five complete and established season highs for walks (five) and strikeouts (seven). He was responsible for seven hits and threw 101 pitches.
Both Nelson Payano and Henry Villar tossed two innings of scoreless relief for the victors.
Both pitching staffs had problems with the free pass; they combined for 12 walks.
Southpaw Douglas Arguello (6-3) pitches for the Hooks Monday night against Tim Kiely (4-5). First pitch of the series finale is 7:05 and fans enjoy $1 hot dogs and soda, compliments of Mrs Baird's.
