Springfield Cardinals News Release

San Antonio, TX - The Cardinals were shut out on Saturday night for the first time in 2010 and there were determined to change that trend on Sunday afternoon.

After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals would crack the score board first as Charlie Cutler singled, Aaron Luna reached on an error and Adron Chambers singled home Cutler to give Springfield a 1-0 lead.

Cardinals' starter David Kopp got off to a hot start as he allowed just one hit through the first three innings. In the 4th, Kopp allowed back to back single and a two-out walk to load the bases before striking out pitcher Corey Kluber to end the Missions' threat.

Springfield would pad their lead in the 6th as Charlie Cutler led off the inning with a single and went to third on a base hit by Adron Chambers. With one out, Pete Kozma would reach on a fielder's choice allowing Cutler to score to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.

David Kopp would give the Cards five shut out innings during his starting allowing just four hits and walking three. Tom Eager pitched 1.1 innings of relief and left the game in the top of the 7th with two runners on. Matt Meyer would pick up Eager by striking out Matt Clark and Sawyer Carroll with the tying runs on base to end the inning with the Cardinals still lead 2-0.

In the 8th with Springfield still lead 2-0, the Cardinals got two straight walks to start the inning. After a failed bunt attempt kept runners at first and second, Adron Chambers and Pete Kozma executed a double steal to put runners at second and third with pinch hitter Jose Garcia at the plate. With two strikes, Garcia would line a single to right scoring Chambers and Kozma to grab a 4-0 lead.

The Cardinals added another run in the 9th on an RBI single by Adron Chambers to score Charlie Cutler to make it a 5-0 Springfield lead.

Francisco Samuel and Adam Reifer would throw the final two innings to complete the shut out, the Cardinals second and three games to even the series with the Missions at a game apiece.

The Cardinals will conclude their series against San Antonio Monday night. Springfield will send left hander Nick Additon (3-4) to the mound for game three against left hander Cory Luebke (1-0) of the Missions.

Springfield will return home Wednesday June 9th and 2,500 fans will receive Cardinals Key-Chains thanks to our friends at ANPAC.
