Hooks end six-game skid with 7-1 triumph
September 1, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) - Having surrendered 15 earned runs over 11.2 innings in his last three outings, Ronnie Martinez' scheduled start Friday night did not give Hooks' fans a reason to be excited. They have plenty of reasons to be excited now.
Martinez carried a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning and emerged as the winning pitcher as the Hooks snapped their six-game losing streak and beat the Missions 7-1. The victory pulls the Hooks back to 34-34 in the second half and 75-62 overall.
Martinez (3-1) was simply brilliant, retiring 13 in a row at one point and posting five 1-2-3 innings. Up 7-0 when he took the mound in the bottom of the ninth, Martinez lost his bid for a shutout when Jesus Guzman opened the frame with a home run down the left field line. Martinez gave up a single to Yung Chi Chen after the Guzman homer and was lifted in favor of Chad Reineke, who fanned the three men he faced to end the game.
For the night, Martinez worked eight innings plus two batters and allowed a run on five hits without issuing a walk. He tied his season high for strikeouts with eight. The effort was his longest this season, besting his previous high of seven innings, which he had accomplished five times with Salem in the Carolina League.
Martinez got plenty of support from the likes of Mark Saccomanno and Hunter Pence. Saccomanno, named the Hooks' Player of the Month for August on Friday, delivered the game's big blow - a grand slam home run in Corpus Christi's five-run top half of the fourth. The homer was the 19th this season for Saccomanno and his third grand slam of the year. Corpus Christi's third baseman is now 4-for-5 this season with the bases loaded, with a double and three home runs. In the first two seasons for the franchise in Corpus Christi, the Hooks have clubbed six grand slams - four of them by Saccomanno.
Pence put the Hooks on top 1-0 in the fourth with an RBI double off the base of the wall in right-center. In the sixth, he led off the inning with a single and later came around to score. Pence finished the night 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. He has four hits over the last two games.
Lefty Carlos Hernandez (0-1, 13.91) takes the hill for the Hooks on Saturday, while the Missions go with Jorge Campillo (1-0, 3.18). Saturday's game is set to begin at 7:05 pm.
