Drillers lose third straight

September 1, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

The Wichita Wranglers got all the offense they needed early in the game to extend the Tulsa Drillers losing streak to three games. The Wranglers scored eight times in the second inning and, for the third straight game, the Drillers were held to only one run as Wichita posted a 10-1 victory.

The Wranglers big second inning came against Tulsa starter Steven Register. The first eight hitters of the inning reached with Donnie Murphy getting things started with his 14th homer of the year. After a walk to Kia Kaaihue, the next six hitters all hit safely and Wichita had a 6-0 lead. A sacrifice fly, an error and another base hit made it 8-0.

Tulsa's lone run scored in the third as Alvin Colina singled to begin the inning. Jeff Dragicevich walked and Seth Smith followed with a single that scored Colina. Wranglers' starter Junior Herndon got consecutive strikeouts and a ground out to end the threat.

Wichita scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings against the Drillers bullpen to make the final 10-1.

A trio of Wichita pitchers held Tulsa to only four hits. Joe Koshansky was 0-4 and still needs one home run to tie the Drillers all-time home run record of 32 homers in a single season.

The Wranglers produced 16 hits, led by Angel Sanchez and Brett Groves who had three hits each. Five other Wichita players had two hits each.

The two teams have now split 26 meetings this season.

The Drillers will continue their five-game series with the Wranglers Saturday night. Jon Asahina (1-2, 4.73 ERA) will pitch for Tulsa against Billy Buckner (4-3, 5.09 ERA) of Wichita. First pitch at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is scheduled for 7:00PM.
