Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - Colin Moran's lead-off, 10th-inning triple and three shutout frames from Jandel Gustave sent the Hooks to a 7-6 triumph over the RoughRiders Saturday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
Trailing 6-5, Brett Phillips opened the ninth with a base hit to left field. Teoscar Hernandez's single to center put runners at the corners for Jack Mayfield. Riders closer David Martinez (2-5) managed to induce a double play but Phillips crossed the pay station to tie the game.
In the 10th, Moran narrowly missed a home run by crushing a 1-0 pitch off the top of the fence in left. Alfredo Gonzalez was next and delivered a sac fly to center field, pushing the Hooks in front 7-6.
Gustave (3-1) was electric Saturday night, yielding two base runners while striking out four over a season-high three innings. The hard-throwing right-hander registered 25 of 38 pitches for strikes.
A two-run home run by Nomar Mazara helped Frisco (17-11, 46-52) build a 4-0 advantage through the first five innings.
Hooks starter Kyle Westwood matched his season-best for strikeouts, fanning six batters in five and 1/3 innings. Frisco mustered five hits, one walk and three earned runs against him.
Corpus Christi (15-14, 63-36) put Westwood in position to win the game, sending 10 men to the plate in a five-run sixth. After striking out the first batter, Edwar Cabrera permitted the next six to reach via four singles and a pair of walks. Andrew Faulkner entered from the Frisco pen and was greeted by Jio Mier, who seared a single down the right-field line for a 5-4 Hooks edge.
Chris Cotton relieved Westwood in the home half but was unable to record an out. Trever Adams leveled the game with a double off the fence in right field. Cotton then struck out Drew Robinson, but the decisive pitch skipped past Gonzalez, enabling Preston Beck to scamper home for the go-ahead run.
Aaron West bridged the gap to Gustave, hurling one and 2/3 scoreless frames.
Corpus Christi aims for the series victory Sunday evening. Lefty Josh Hader (3-3, 3.23) and Ruben Alaniz (2-2, 5.96) are slated to pitch for the Hooks. The Riders counter with Jose Leclerc (5-4, 4.28). First pitch 6:05. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
