Drillers Lose in Urias' Return
July 26, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers had Julio Urias back on the mound Sunday night for the first time in over two months, but it still was not enough to help end a five-game losing streak. Urias pitched effectively, but he was undone by one mistake. The result was a 4-1 loss to the Arkansas Travelers that extended the Drillers losing streak to six straight games, matching a season high.
The victory also gave the Travelers a sweep of the four-game series at ONEOK Field.
Urias, one of the top pitching prospects in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system, was back on the mound in Tulsa for the first time since May 12 after undergoing eye surgery. He started well, blanking the Travelers through the first three innings.
The Drillers gave Urias an early lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Adam Law led off with a base hit and eventually scored on a base hit by Ronald Torreyes.
The Travs answered in the top of the fourth. Chad Hinshaw reached on an error to open the inning when left fielder Brian Burgamy misplayed his fly ball, then scored on a one-out double from Blake Gailen. After Brian Hernandez singled to put runners at first and third, Michael Snyder provided the pivotal hit of the game. Snyder cleared the bases with his second home run of the season to give the Travelers a 4-1 lead.
Snyder's blast would prove to be the final offensive output of the night.
Urias recovered to set the Travs down in order in the fifth, and Ralston Cash did not allow a base runner in two perfect relief innings.
Ryan Dennick set Arkansas down in order in the eighth. He allowed a single and an intentional walk in the ninth, but he kept Arkansas from adding to its lead.
The Drillers were unable to mount a comeback. They were limited to only one hit over the six innings.
The final pitching line for Urias was adversely affected by Snyder's home run. The lefthander worked five innings and was charged with four runs, three earned, on six hits. Three of the runs came on Snyder's homer. Urias did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Arkansas starter Albert Suarez worked 7.2 innings and was charged with just the one run on four hits.
Greg Mahle closed out the game by retiring all four batters he faced to pick up his 10th save of the season.
Tulsa will open a three-game series with Springfield Monday night at ONEOK Field. Ross Stripling (1-3, 5.00 ERA) will take the mound for the Drillers against Jimmy Reed (2-1, 2.82 ERA) of the Cardinals. First pitch in downtown Tulsa is set for 7:05PM.
