July 27, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Honkers needed a win against the Mankato MoonDogs to stay within three games of the Alexandria Beetles today. The Honkers did just that, winning 4-3 and salvaging the series after Mankato won games one and two. The Honkers are now 10-8 in the second half, eclipsing their win total from the first half where they went 9-23.
Kevin Johnson (So, Illinois) got the nod on the mound in the game for the Honkers, making his seventh start of the season. Johnson lasted 5.2 innings before leaving the game to the bullpen, allowing three runs on seven hits and tied his season high with five strikeouts.
A duo of pitchers in Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton) and Adam Hoelscher (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) would take over for the next 2.1 innings collectively allowing no hits or runs heading into the ninth inning. Austin House (So, New Mexico) would come into the game and close the door on the MoonDogs, getting his seventh save of the season. House would make it interesting after getting two outs after Shaun Cooper got on with an error, House would strike out the final batter, clinching the win for Rochester.
Bryan Karraker (Jr, New Mexico State) would lead the team in batting in the game, going 2-for-4 and driving in one run on the game. (Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) would get back to his typical play after going 0-for-4 on Tuesday, going 1-for-4 in the game with his eighth homerun and drove in two runs, number 33 and 34 on the season.
This will be the last the Honkers and MoonDogs see of each other until a possible playoff match up if the Honkers are able to capture the second half title. The Honkers will travel to Willmar and St. Cloud for two games in Willmar and two doubleheaders in St. Cloud before coming back for a six game home stand at Mayo Field. The home stand starts on Monday, August 1 when the Willmar Stingers come to town. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
