Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - July 27, 2011. The Madison Mallards will host the Battle Creek Bombers Wednesday in the finale of a two-game series at the "Duck Pond." The team will look to recover after their 10-5 defeat at the hands of the Bombers a night ago.
Despite the loss Tuesday, the Mallards have a lot to be positive about going into Wednesday's game. The team walked four hitters and also committed four errors that led to four unearned runs. Despite those mistakes, the team played well and made a good attempt at a comeback. Without the unearned runs and walks, the team outscored the Bombers by a run. The offense aggressively scored five runs on nine hits, and the pitching staff was lights out, as they notched 17 strikeouts.
Looking to help the Mallards get back on the winning track will be starting pitcher Jonathon Crawford (Florida). Crawford is 1-1 this season with a 5.48 ERA in eight appearances. He has tallied 30 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched, but has a WHIP of 2.00. The Mallards are 6-2 when he pitches, and Crawford has not pitched against Battle Creek this season.
Troy Forton (Western Michigan) will throw for the Bombers. Forton has a 4-3 record with a 3.04 ERA this season over ten appearances. The team is 6-4 when he pitches, which includes a 4-2 win back on June 13 against the Mallards in Michigan. In that game, Forton went seven innings and allowed two runs against a season high eight hits and one walk. He also struck out five.
Following the game Wednesday, the Mallards will head to Wausau to take on the Woodchucks in another two-game series. Thursday's game one will begin at 6:35 p.m., and the series will conclude with another 6:35 p.m. start on Friday.
The next time the Mallards will play at the "Duck Pond" after Wednesday's game will be Saturday, July 30 in a 6:05 p.m. game with the La Crosse Loggers.
