Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - July 27, 2011. The Madison Mallards defeated the Battle Creek Bombers 4-1 Wednesday night in front of 5,951 fans at the "Duck Pond." The game had a little bit of everything, from timely offense to good pitching as the Mallards finish their five-game homestand with a 3-2 record.

The game was close throughout. Battle Creek scored first as Ryne Otis (Taylor University) crossed home after a Mallards' error. Madison would rally for two runs to start the fifth as Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) and Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) both drove in runs.

The Mallards had to not only outlast the Bombers, but Mother Nature as well, as the game was delayed thirty minutes after Theunissen's fifth inning hit due to lightning.

Following the delay, the Mallards scored once more in the fifth and seventh to bring the winning margin to three runs.

Owen and Theunissen each had two hits and scored a run. Also leading the Mallards offensively Wednesday was Andrew Wasmund (Madison College), as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Andrew Barna (Davidson) had the final RBI, and Justin Parr (Illinois) had the only other hit for the Mallards, who outhit the Bombers 7-5.

Jonathon Crawford (Florida) pitched five innings to pick up win number two on the season. He allowed an unearned run on three hits, walked three, and struck out five to get his first win since July 1.

Denny Clement (Texas A&M), Matt Milroy (Illinois), and Tony Bryant (Oregon State) all came on in relief for Crawford after the right-handed pitcher exited in the fifth. Clement and Milroy each picked up holds and Bryant pitched a perfect ninth to notch his fourth save of the season.

The loss went to Battle Creek starter Troy Forton (Western Michigan). Forton allowed three runs on four hits, and exited after 4.2 innings due to the long weather delay. Forton (4-4) walked three and struck out seven, and is now 1-1 against the Mallards this season.

The Mallards will now travel to Wausau to take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks at Athletic Park for a two-game series that starts Thursday and concludes Friday. Both games will start at 6:35 p.m. Madison will return to the "Duck Pond" Saturday to start a three-game set against La Crosse at 6:05 p.m.
