Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers finally got to play a game, after being rained out in three consecutive nights, splitting a two game, seven inning double header with the Duluth Huskies. The Honkers dropped game one by a score of 4-1, and won game two by a score of 4-2.
Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-8 with a homerun in game two, and a RBI in game one. The homerun was his first of the season, in just two games played. Johnny just met up with the team in Duluth, after being a late signee for the Honkers. Coy's homerun was in the eighth inning, to take the lead for the Honkers in extra innings of game two.
Drew Bowen (Jr, Oral Roberts) got the start for the Honkers in the first game, pitching the entire game, allowing four runs on 11 hits. Bowen received his first loss of the season falling to 1-1. The Honkers could only muster five hits to back up Bowen in the first game.
Matt Strahm (Fr, Neosho County CC) got the start in game two, looking to earn his second win of the season. Strahm had started three games before this one, holding a 1-1 record. He would pitch very well, allowing just one run on five hits, but yielding to Austin House (So, New Mexico) out of the bullpen in extra innings.
House pitched two innings of one hit baseball, and picking up the win for the Honkers, making his record 1-0 with one save on the season. House struck out three on the day. The Honkers would need late inning heroics twice, with the homerun from Coy in the 8th and a two RBI double out of Scott Thornburg (Jr, Creighton) in the ninth, to take the definite lead for the Honkers and picking up a split on the double header.
The two teams will play a nine inning game tomorrow, a rubber match, with the series tied at one each. The Honkers will have Aaron Siefken (Jr, Bethany Lutheran) on the mound, looking to add to an already impressive season. First pitch is at 7:05 at Wade Stadium. The Honkers will return home on Sunday, to take on the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers at 1:05pm at Mayo Field, followed by another 1:05 game on Monday, before heading into an off day on Tuesday, June 28.
