Back to the "Duck Pond" as Mallards Attempt to Sweep Loggers
June 25, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 25, 2011. After a five-hour, 14-inning victory Friday, the Madison Mallards return to the "Duck Pond" to cap a three-game series against the La Crosse Loggers at 6:05 p.m. Saturday evening.
Friday's win gave the Mallards their third consecutive series win, and with a victory on Saturday, the team would have four sweeps under their belts before July 1st. On the other hand, the Mallards have only been swept once.
After pounding out 16 hits Friday, the Mallards increased their team batting average to .289, which moves them to number one in the league in front of the first-place Eau Claire Express.
Over the last week, the offense has been led by Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin), Andrew Barna (Davidson), Jake Page (Madison College), Niko Fraser (Elon), and Willie Argo (Illinois). All five players are hitting over .400 and have at least nine official at-bats. No one seems to be hotter than Owen, who is batting .524 in 21 at-bats, and Argo, who has hit two home runs and driven in ten.
Taking the mound for the Mallards Saturday will be Joel Effertz (Madison College). Effertz has been as consistent as they come for the Ducks this season. In three starts, Effertz has allowed only three runs over nineteen innings, and he has struck out 20. At 1-0 on the season, Effertz also carries a miniscule 1.42 ERA coming into Saturday's game.
Only two hitters for the Loggers are hitting over .300 over the last seven days. Jake Stassi (Long Beach State) and Mike Reeves (Florida Gulf Coast) will lead La Crosse into game action.
Saturday will also be Summit Credit Union "Play More Catch" Night, where families can play catch in the outfield following the game. Also following the game will be Hy-Vee fireworks, the second installment of the popular post-game display this season.
It is also St. Mary's Sun Prairie Emergency Center Community Night. Fans receive 2-for-1 field box tickets with proof of residency in Sun Prairie only. The first 500 adults into the gates at the "Duck Pond" will receive first aid kits courtesy of St. Mary's Sun Prairie Emergency Center
