Honkers Hold off Huskies; Not Rain

June 9, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release

With, 1-1 tie, no outs in the top of the ninth, and runners on first and second for Duluth, the rain finally got the best of the two teams at Mayo Field, and forced a suspension of the game. The fans will have to wait almost a full 24 hours to know the result of tonight's Rochester Honkers game against the Duluth Huskies, the teams will finish the game at 6:05 tomorrow.

The Northwoods League rules state that a full five innings counts as a complete game, however with the decision still in doubt, the teams will continue tomorrow. The normally scheduled game will be played following the conclusion.

Both teams got great outings out of their starters. The Honkers debuted Brian Flynn (RsSo, Wichita State), the Detroit Tigers seventh round pick this past week. Flynn pitched a gem for the Honkers, going seven innings, allowing six hits, walking just two, and striking out 10, including the last two batters he faced with the bases loaded in the seventh.

His counterpart Joey Novak also pitched very well, matching Flynn's seven innings, but only striking out five, allowing four hits. Kameron Krise (So, College of the Canyons) relieved Flynn, and was currently in his second inning of work when the game was called. Elliot Van Gaver came in to relieve Novak, pitching one inning before the game was called.

Davy Wright (So, Texas Christian) doubled for the second night in a row, and Matt Beyer (Jr, UW-Whitewater) also hit a double just two batters later for the Honkers, scoring Wright, for the Honkers lone run of the game.

The two teams will have a doubleheader like day tomorrow, as they try to finish two games. Game time is scheduled to start at 6:05 and then game two will be played 30 minutes after the completion of tonight's started game. Nick Dolsky (So, Nebraska) is the scheduled starter for the Honkers in game two, and Tyler Blomberg is the scheduled starter for Duluth in game two.
