Waterloo Visits for Two-Game Set Versus Mallards
June 9, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 9, 2011. After rain postponed their game Wednesday, the Madison Mallards will take the field Thursday night in the opener of a two-game series against the Waterloo Bucks at 7:05 at the "Duck Pond."
The unexpected day off gives the Mallards some extra options tonight, as players received additional rest.
"No one ever likes rain delays," said Mallards' field manager Greg Labbe. "We'll use this to our advantage against Waterloo. Our guys had the chance to unwind and relax a little bit, which helps coming off of the long road trip to start the season."
Chris Burgess (Blackhawk College), yesterday's scheduled starter, will go today for the Mallards. Burgess is 1-0 on the season and was named the "Pitcher of the Night" by the Northwoods League for his performance in his last start against Wisconsin Rapids. He went seven complete innings, giving up two runs on five hits while walking no one and striking out eight.
On the mound for Waterloo will be Mike Wisecarver (Nicholls State). Wisecarver (0-0) started for the Bucks on June 3rd, going five innings and allowing no runs on four hits in the Bucks' 4-3 win over Battle Creek. Wisecarver did not factor in the decision.
Hoping to continue their hot starts to the season against Wisecarver will be Mike Hollenbeck (Illinois State) and Jordan Owen (Tennessee-Martin). Hollenbeck enters Thursday's game with a five-game hitting streak, and Owen has a seven-game hitting streak.
Thursday's Promotions
Human Cannonball David "The Bullet" Smith, Jr. will perform after the game.
Thursday is "How Beer Saved the World Night." It will also be "Beer Appreciation Night."
Charter Communications will also be presenting "Poster Schedule Night."
In the News
The Mallards activated pitcher Matt Milroy (Illinois) and infielder/outfielder Justin Parr (Illinois) Thursday morning. Both Milroy and Parr will be in uniform for the Ducks against Waterloo. The teammates out of the University of Illinois helped the Illini capture a share of the Big Ten regular season title and won the conference tournament in late May.
