
Honkers Fall to Thunder Bay at Mayo Field

(Rochester, Minn.) - The Honkers fell behind 2-0 in the first and ultimately couldn't come back, falling 5-3 to the Thunder Bay Border Cats at Mayo Field Tuesday night.
Shane Shepard (North Carolina State) hit an RBI single, and then Mitch Bigras (Boston College) hit a sacrifice fly to give the Border Cats a 2-0 lead.
The Border Cats added another run in the top of the fourth, then got a RBI triple from Bigras, giving Thunder Bay a 4-0 lead.
The Honkers cut the lead in half in the fifth; they got an RBI single from Miles Lewis (North Dakota), followed by an RBI single from Alex Fitchett (Hawaii).
The Border Cats pushed their lead to 5-2 after a Anthony Brocato (St. Johns University) hit a solo home run. The Honkers got another run in the bottom of the eighth on a double from Jackson Thoreson (St. Marys), as the Honkers fell 5-3.
Isaac Friesen (0-3) (Hawaii) got the start and the loss for the Honkers; he pitched five innings, allowed four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two. Hunter Van Horn (Clemson) and Tanner Schumacher (Purdue) pitched two innings each of relief, giving up one total run and struck out five.
Jordan Thompson (1-3) (Ridgewater College) got the start and the win for the Border Cats; he pitched seven innings, allowed two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out three.
The Honkers out hit the Border Cats 9-6, and the Border Cats committed the only error of the game.
Lewis and Fitchett went 2 for 4 with an RBI each to lead the Honkers' offense. Fitchett also collected a run scored.
Andy Weber (University of Virginia) went 3 for 4 with two runs scored to lead the Border Cats' offense. Bigras went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI to help push Thunder Bay's offense.
The Honkers are back in action tomorrow night for a day-night double header against the Mankato MoonDogs. Game 1 will be in Mankato with first pitch set for 12:05 p.m. Game 2 will be in Rochester, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6! It is League of Future Starts Night at Mayo Field, presented by Meshbesher & Spence. All RYBA, RYSA, RYHA, Girls Softball and Miracle League players that wear their uniform top gain general admission for free! Thursday, the Honkers are at home against the Eau Claire Express with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6! Thursday is Mascot Olympics presented by Y105-FM!
