Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN)-The Rochester Honkers were handed their second loss in as many games on Thursday night at their home opener at Mayo field, losing 10-4 to the Waterloo Bucks.
Honker leftfielder Ben Lahn (Lamar CC) was 2 for 4 with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but the Bucks pitching was too much to handle for the home team.
Waterloo reliever Nick Maiers (St. Cloud State) picked up the victory after throwing 2.0 innings of one-run baseball.
The Waterloo starter, Micah Bryan (Charlotte), tossed 4.0 innings and surrendered just one run and scattered two Honker hits while striking out six. The Bucks bullpen kept the lead in tact over the final 5.0 innings combining to hold Rochester to three runs and five hits.
Rochester starter DJ Snelten (Minnesota) was solid in his 5.0 innings of work, giving up just two earned runs on two hits, while striking out ten Waterloo batters, but was left with the no-decision. Right hander Elliot Engle (Doane) pitched the sixth and seventh innings in relief for the Honkers and surrendered one run on a hit and three walks to pick up the loss.
Honkers right hander Merrick McGrady (North Park) had a rough outing in which he gave up six runs in just 1.0 inning of relief.
The Honkers left ten runners on base in this game and couldn't quite get the bats rolling at a consistent rate, combining for 13 strikeouts at the plate.
Waterloo centerfielder Benny Roberts (Washington State) went 2 for 4 with two runs and a three-run homerun for the victors.
The Honkers (0-2) are back in action tomorrow at 7:05 at home against the Thunder Bay Border Cats (1-1).
