Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers were unable to complete a two-game sweep over the Thunder Bay Border Cats as they were defeated 3-1 on Saturday June 8, at Mayo Field.
The Honkers got on the board first when they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning without getting a hit. Tucker Tharp (Kansas) drew a walk to start the inning. He stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the Border Cats catcher, Jacob Rogers, and scored on a double steal. Alex Greer (Iowa Western) stole second base and Tharp beat the throw back to the plate to give Rochester an early 1-0 lead.
Honkers starting pitcher Elliott Engle (Doane College) turned in his best performance of the young season. He pitched six shutout innings, while allowing five hits and recording five strikeouts. Toby Thomas (Pensacola State) was the first to relieve Engle. He issued two walks and allowed a single to load the bases for Rogers with just one out in the top of the seventh inning. Rogers delivered with a bases clearing double down the left field line to give Thunder Bay a 3-1 lead after six and a half innings. The three runs allowed caused Thomas to take the loss in his first appearance on the mound this season.
Border Cats starting pitcher Daniel Stoney recorded just one out before leaving the game in the first inning with an injury. John Havird (1-1) picked up the win in relief. He allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings for Thunder Bay.
Reid Roper (Illinois) drew a walk, Connor Goedert (Neosho County Community College) singled, and Steve Serratore walked to fill the bases for Matt Halloran (Minnesota) with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Halloran was struck out looking by Thunder Bay pitcher Michael Foster to end the inning. Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College,) Stephen Paladino (Felician College,) and Hayden Edwards (Kansas) combined to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings in relief for the Honkers.
Rochester (5-6) will host the St. Cloud Rox (5-6) at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, June 9th. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) is scheduled to make his third start of the season for the Honkers. Eric Nyquist is slated to start for the Rox.
