Homer-Happy Missions Defeat 'Riders
July 16, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Despite jumping out to an early lead, the RoughRiders fell to the Missions 9-6 on Monday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. All of the San Antonio's runs came via the home run as Frisco starter Scott Shoemaker surrendered five long balls including two solo shots from Nick Hundley. Salomon Manriquez led the way for the âRiders going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. German Duran added a solo homer and scored two runs.
The Missions scored first as Will Venable hit his fourth home run of the year on the sixth pitch of the ballgame. The âRiders answered in the bottom of the first with a bases loaded clearing double by Brandon Boggs to make the score 3-1. In the second frame, San Antonio got a run back as Hundley hit his first homer of the game. The Missions retook the lead 6-3 in the following inning as Chase Headley hit a three run home run followed by Hundley's second of the game a few batters later.
Duran's team-best 17th homer of the season got the âRiders within two at 6-4, but Matt Antonelli hit his second home run in as many nights in the fourth to put the Missions back up by three. Frisco rallied in the eighth as they tacked on two more runs to make the score 7-6. John Mayberry led off with his eighth home run and fourth in his past six games. A Manriquez RBI double scored Kevin Richardson, but the âRiders comeback fell short as Anthony Webster lined into a double play. San Antonio added two more runs in the ninth to give the San Antonio bullpen some cushion.
Shoemaker (1-1) allowed seven runs in his 3 1/3 innings of work. He surrendered seven hits, five of the long ball variety. The Frisco bullpen pitched the final 5 2/3 innings allowing two runs and just three hits. Cesar Ramos (8-7) lasted 6 1/3 innings surrendering four runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two. Jonathan Ellis registered his second save of the season as he worked a scoreless ninth.
The âRiders produced double digit hits for the first time in their past ten games as Manriquez, Duran, and Boggs each had multi-hit games. Venable collected three hits and scored three times to lead the Mission offense.
The series continues Tuesday night as Doug Mathis (7-5) takes the hill for Frisco while Wade LeBlanc (1-1) gets the start for San Antonio. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
