Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers hung on for a 5-4 win over the Springfield Cardinals on Monday night, taking the second game of the four-game set.
A 78 minute rain delay before first pitch made for sloppy field conditions and some sloppy play on the field, as the Cards committed three errors.
Tulsa right-hander Ryan Mattheus (7-6) worked into the eighth inning, but needed some help from his defense to earn the win.
Leading 5-3 in the eighth, Mattheus walked Bryan Anderson to open the inning, then allowed a double to Juan Richardson, putting the tying runs at second and third with no outs. Tulsa left-hander Adam Bright came on and threw just one pitch, getting Mark Hamilton to ground out to first base for the first out. On the play though, Anderson scored to make it 5-4 and Richardson advanced to third. Tulsa made another pitching change, as Jarrett Grube came in to face Juan Lucena. Lucena lined a pitch off the glove of Grube, but with the Tulsa infield pulled in, second baseman Corey Wimberly had time to field it and throw to the plate, getting Juan Richardson for the second out of the inning. Mark Shorey followed with a single, putting runners at first and third, but Casey Rowlett flew out to right field to end the inning.
Steven Register collected his league-leading 28th save, setting the Cards down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Tulsa did their damage early, as Cards' starter Adam Daniels (3-3) got roughed up for five runs in the first three innings. A two-run blast to left field by Christian Colonel put the Drillers up 2-0 in the first.
Springfield answered with a run in the second, as Mark Hamilton opened the inning with a walk and a stolen base. After advancing to third on a groundout, Hamilton scored on Mark Shorey's RBI groundout, making it 2-1.
Tulsa countered with two more in the second, as Tommy Duenas knocked in a run with an RBI single and Jordan Czarniecki later scored on one of Springfield's three errors, making it 4-1.
The Redbirds got a run back in the third, as Jose Martinez scored on a Sean Danielson RBI single, cutting the deficit to two at 4-2.
Tulsa got that run back in the third though, as Chris Frey's two-out RBI single plated Aaron Rifkin, making it 5-2.
The Cards made it 5-3 in the sixth, as Sean Danielson led off the inning with his third hit, a double to right field. Juan Richardson later knocked him in with an RBI single, giving Richardson a league-leading 61 RBIs.
Cards' starter Adam Daniels (3-3) took his second straight loss, allowing five runs, four of which were earned, on ten hits over six innings.
With the loss, Springfield's record in the second half falls to 16-8 and 52-39 overall. The Cards will send Mitchell Boggs (9-3) to the mound on Tuesday night in the third game of the four-game series, while Tulsa will go with Ching-Lung Lo (4-6). Game time on Tuesday will be 7:05pm.
