Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries and Alltel Wireless have teamed up to announce a Youth Home Run Derby to be held throughout the Sioux Empire this summer to benefit the American Red Cross. The competition is open to all 8-12 year olds in the Sioux Empire and will culminate with the Alltel Wireless Youth Home Run Derby Championship on August 21 at Sioux Falls Stadium.

"We are excited to be teaming up with the Canaries and Alltel Wireless for a fun, youth oriented program to benefit local Red Cross chapters," said Kristen Townsend of the Sioux Empire American Red Cross. "This is a great addition to our fundraising efforts and we encourage kids throughout the area to participate."

"As a new neighbor to Sioux Falls, we at Alltel Wireless are thrilled to partner with the Canaries for this fun-filled competition," said Brian Jones, Vice President of Retail Operations for Alltel Wireless. "The Alltel Wireless Youth Home Run Derby provides an opportunity for the youth of Eastern South Dakota to have a great time all summer long, while at the same time benefiting a great cause like the American Red Cross."

Regional competitions will be held in six cities throughout the Sioux Empire. The first regional competition will take place in Sioux Falls on Sunday, July 23. Regional competitions will follow in Brookings (Monday, July 24), Huron (Tuesday, July 25), Watertown (Wednesday, July 26), Mitchell (Friday, July 28), and Yankton (Saturday, July 29). Each regional will start at 11:00 a.m. For further information on regional events, contact Ned Gavlick, Assistant General Manager of the Sioux Falls Canaries, by calling 333-0179.

To participate in a regional competition, children are being asked to raise at least $30 for their local American Red Cross chapter. Every 8-12 year old who raises $30 will qualify to participate in a regional competition and will receive two tickets to the Canaries August 21 game vs. the Lincoln Saltdogs. Any participant who raises $150 or more will receive a family four pack including four tickets, four hot dogs, and four sodas. The participant who raises the most money at each regional competition will receive three luxury suite tickets for the August 21 game.

The top two home run hitters from each regional will advance to the Alltel Wireless Youth Home Run Derby Championship at Sioux Falls Stadium. The finals will be held prior to the Canaries August 21 game.

Sign-up forms for the Youth Home Run Derby are available at Alltel Wireless stores throughout the Sioux Empire. Alltel is owner and operator of the nation's largest wireless network and has more than 10 million wireless customers.
