Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, NY- The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, bring in the 2008-2009 ECHL season with a bang tomorrow night at First Arena. The Jackals match up against their biggest rival, the Reading Royals. The rivalry has grown into more than just a friendly Friday night game. The Royals knocked the Jackals out of Kelly Cup contention last season. The two hockey teams met up twice in pre-season and just two seconds into the first game, the gloves were dropped. In the second game, the Jackals skated to a 4-2 win in Reading and now look to make it two in a row.

Helping the Jackals cause will be newly acquired defenseman Wes Cunningham. Cunningham comes to the Jackals from the Florida Everblades, in exchange for the rights to Steve McJannet. Cunningham, the former OHL All-Star, was most recently with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League where he netted six goals and added 43 assists as a defenseman. The 5'11'' 190 pound native of Dresden, Ontario will add some offensive skill to the blue line.

"Wes is an offensive defenseman that moves the puck real well. He is a bonus for our power play." Said Jackals Head Coach Steve Martinson.

Tickets are going fast for the home opener, you can reserve yours now by calling 734-PUCK. Be at First Arena at 5:00 p.m. for the "Block Party". Opening face off is at 7:35 p.m.
