Chiefs Name Captain For 2008-09
October 16, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters and Syracuse Crunch, announced today that Randy Rowe has been named captain for the 2008-09 season.
"Randy proved last year he was the leader of our team, and he is a huge part of this organization. I'm looking forward to working with him again this year and we're both expecting good things," said Coach Ian Herbers.
Rowe, who hails from Burford, Ontario, is entering his eighth professional season and fourth as a member of the Chiefs. He has served as a captain in each of his last two seasons in Johnstown.
In 2007-08 Rowe tied a career-high point total with 68 (24G, 44A), and led the team in scoring while playing in 58 games. He also became the first player in Chiefs history to earn three league awards in the same month. The 28-year-old left wing began by being named ECHL Player of the Week for March 24-30 as he scored eight points (2G, 6A) in three games. Then on April 3, 2008 Rowe was awarded the ECHL Player of the Month Award and Co-Plus Performer of the Month for March. By scoring in each of the 14 games he played in, Rowe racked up six goals, 16 assists, and a plus-13 rating.
"It's an honor to be a captain here in Johnstown with the history of hockey in this town," said Rowe.
"We've got a great group of guys in the locker room. Everyone knows I'm not a yeller or a screamer, and that I'm just going to work hard and try to lead by example."
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs open their 2008-09 home schedule on Saturday, October 18 at 7:05 against the Wheeling Nailers, and you won't want to miss a minute of the action.
