Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY â Auburn Doubledays manager Dennis Holmberg is in his second season managing the Doubledays. Last season, Holmberg led Auburn to the Pinckney Division Championship and a playoff appearance for the first time since 1998. On a cool night at Falcon Park, the Auburn Doubledays defeated Pinckney Division rivals Mahoning Valley 5-1. The triumph marks regular season win number 100 for Holmberg, whose regular season record as Auburn manager improves to 100-44 with a .694 winning percentage. The 2003 Pinckney Division champion Doubledays record this season jumps to 53-15 with seven games left to play. Tonight's victory sets a single season record for wins for an Auburn baseball team in the short season era. The 1967 Auburn Twins held the previous record at 52-26.
Auburn pitching, led by starter Justin James led the Doubledays holding hapless Mahoning Valley to just three hits through eight innings before the Scrappers plated a single run in the ninth. James (2-1) earned his second victory of the season pitching five scoreless innings allowing just two hits with two strikeouts. Relievers Jeremy Harper and Joaquin Canizal hurled three combined scoreless innings not allowing a single hit with two strikeouts apiece.
Left fielder Jarad Mangioni led the Doubledays offense going 2-for-4 with two RBI and the game-winning single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Third basemen Ryan Roberts provided the biggest thrill of the night with an inside the park homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning. Roberts drove a long fly ball off the center field wall, over center fielder Brad Snyder's head. The lightning-fast Roberts would round the bases quickly and score easily for his eighth homerun of the season. In his pursuit of the Triple Crown, Auburn first basemen Vito Chiaravalloti went 1-for-2 with a run scored, increasing his average to .346.
Scrappers starting pitcher Dan Cevette (0-1), in his first NY-P appearance after being called up from Burlington of the Appalachian League lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts. In the bottom of the first, Cevette walked four Auburn hitters. Catcher Ryan Garko drove in the Scrappers only run in the top of the ninth off Doubledays closer Bubbie Buzachero.
The Doubledays struck first in the very first inning off Cevette. With the bases loaded, Mike Galloway hit a ground ball to the left side that was played by Scrappers third basemen Kevin Kouzmanoff. Kouzmanoff threw to second to force out Vito Chiaravalloti who then broke up the potential double play, allowing Jayce Tingler to score Auburn's first run of the night.
Auburn increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Jarad Mangioni smacked a two-run RBI single scoring Paul Richmond and Erik Kratz to bump Auburn's lead to 3-0. Roberts' inside-the-park homerun the very next inning gave the Doubledays a four-run cushion. With runners on the corners, Mahoning Valley pulled starter Dan Cevette in favor of reliever Adam Hanson. Against the first batter he faced, Hanson was promptly called for a balk, scoring the runner from third for Auburn's fifth and final run.
Against Bubbie Buzachero, Mahoning Valley finally got on the board. Singles by Mike Conroy and Ryan Goleski put Scrapper runners at the corners. Catcher Ryan Garko blooped a single into center field scoring Conroy to cut the lead to 5-1. Buzachero then would strike out Ryan Mulhern to end the game, and clinch manager Dennis Holmberg's 100th regular season win as Doubledays manager.
The 2003 Pinckney Division Champions are back in action tomorrow night at Falcon Park on the final "Doubleday Dollar Thursday" of the season against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers with game time at 7:05 PM. All General Admission tickets, Hoffman hot dogs, Labatt Blue drafts and Coca-cola products are $1 each. For ticket information, call (315) 255-2489.
